No one wants to send an application to their dream job and not hear back from them. Be proactive in improving your chances of being selected from an applicant pool. You know you’re a perfect fit, now make sure you’re taking the right steps to show a hiring manager. We’ve highlighted three major things you can do to increase your chances of landing your dream job.
1. Revamp your resume to fit your dream job
While each job application might be slightly different, you’ll find yourself filling out the same information over and over again. Many job applications ask you for an introduction as well as your work history and experience. Before you try landing your dream job, review how you currently explain your past job experiences. Unclear resumes or incomplete job application questions can contribute to why you’re not being hired.
First, make sure you’re using impactful and succinct keywords when describing previous jobs and tasks. Make sure you’re highlighting what you learned and mastered so a prospective employer knows what you’re bringing to the table. If you’re not sure where to start, consider using a resource like MyPerfectResume or Resume Coach (they both have exclusive deals for our Jobbler community!)
Second, make sure your resume and work history is easy to read and understand. This means using legible font sizes and styles, adding margins and only including relevant information. Your resume and job application answers should be easily scannable, so if a hiring manager can quickly assess your qualifications.
Lastly, make sure you’re using proper grammar and sentence structure both in your resume and your job application answers. Use industry-specific language or skills when possible. (If you need extra support or proofreading, consider redeeming our Jobble Perk with Grammarly!)
2. Expand your ‘dream job search’
If you’ve sent applications to jobs you’d be a good fit for but are not getting hired, it may be a sign that you need to expand your job search. One great place to start is with job titles. While a job title can be important to your resume, it is not always the best way to search for your dream job.
In today’s job market, your skills can matter more than your previously held job titles. Put thought into what you want your job role to be. What role do you want to serve in a company? For example, a sales representative, sales associate and account representative could all describe the same role. If you only do a job search for “sales associate,” you could be missing out on job opportunities you are a good match for. Your dream job could have a different title than you expect, so don’t get hung up on that one field.
Depending on where you are in your career, you may also want to consider getting your foot in the door at companies with promising growth opportunities. Taking a job with lower pay or one you may be overqualified for might be a viable option if you need a new job quickly or are looking to edge into a new industry. If you need to do this, try to identify a company that has room for growth. Starting at a lower tier is worth it if you can see the opportunity to advance your skills and be promoted to a higher position over time. Don’t get caught up in the here-and-now, consider what the position could do for you further in your career as well.
3. Consider consulting a professional resource
Sometimes, not getting hired can be a wake up call. Hiring trends and the current job market may have evolved since the last time you were on a job hunt. Consulting a company that specializes in hiring can give you the competitive edge you need to succeed in landing your dream job.

Another option is to seek a professional group in the industry you want to join. Search for a LinkedIn professional group that is either in the industry you’re interested in or in your physical city. Connecting with like-minded individuals with similar experiences can help you find new job opportunities.
Lastly, consider looking for one-on-one support from a career coach or counselor, who can help you in your search. Career coaches can help you with several aspects of a job search. Find the right career coach or counselor and you can find yourself landing your dream job in no time.
