What To Wear When A Gig Doesn’t Give You a Dress Code

Congratulations, you landed a new gig! After celebrating, it’s time to prepare for your first day, including what you will wear. We wanted to share some tips on how to dress for the job, no matter what the work is (hint: function over fashion, always). 

Office / Desk Work

When you’re working in an office, you don’t need to worry about some of the things you would if you were for instance, working in a warehouse. Leave your steel-toed boots at home, and prioritize clean, closed-toed shoes for a desk job. You could wear jeans to an office, so long as they don’t specify business professional attire – make sure your jeans are not distressed and are free of holes! Most importantly, wear something that you are comfortable and confident in.

Brand Ambassador / Event Staff

Booked a job as a brand ambassador or event staff? Our #1 tip for brand ambassadors and event staff is to avoid logos, bright clothing, and words or slogans. Come to the job in solid-colored clothing that is comfortable and breathable. Make sure you have comfortable shoes and socks – you often have to move quickly in these types of roles.

Warehousing / Manufacturing / Retail

When you’re working in a warehousing, manufacturing, or retail setting, it’s important to wear clothing that allows you to work with ease and comfort. Make sure that your clothing isn’t too tight to restrict movement and avoid overly structured pieces. Avoid clothing that could be considered offensive – when in doubt, wear plain clothing free of words or images. 

Regarding footwear, comfortable and closed-toe is a best practice.  If you are working in a warehousing or manufacturing setting, steel-toed or structured boots are a great idea, as they ensure safety and durability.

Outdoor Work

If your work is going to be outside you’ll want to prepare for the weather. Do your research and check out the forecast for that day – bring layers and comfortable, supportive shoes such as sneakers. Don’t forget your socks- nothing ruins a day like a blister. Opt for lighter, breathable socks in the summer months. Also, don’t forget to apply sunscreen before your shift, and bring it with you in case you need to reapply.
