If you only have experience attending school or college in person, it could take time to adjust to learning online. The good news is that you have a variety of class formats and subject matters available to you.
For example, companies such as Skillshare and Udemy have more than 100,000 courses available with topics ranging from marketing to photography to personal development. You can enroll with a college for your learning online to count towards a degree. However, it is important to understand your learning style before you sign up for your first class.
What is Your Learning Pace?
You may not remember the way you prefer to learn if you have not been in school or taken a course for a while. Some examples of online learning styles include individual, interactive, and collaborative learning.
Taking the time to reflect whether you prefer to work at your own pace or as part of a group is important. It will help point you in the right direction when it comes time to register for an online course or degree program.
Do You Prefer to Learn Using a Certain Type of Media?
Do you like to listen to video lectures or read the material on your own time or follow along as an instructor presents the information live? People who appreciate flexibility often prefer to listen to pre-recorded lessons. Two reasons for this are the ability to complete the course according to their own schedule and to stop the video when necessary. You might also like this learning environment if you find the typical classroom environment distracting or do not want to sit through other students asking questions.
People who thrive on human interaction would likely do better learning online in a live environment. While you’re not physically present in the same space, there’s more discussion and opportunities to ask questions in real time. If you enjoyed traditional school settings but prefer to online courses while home, this option would work well for you.
What Are You Hoping to Accomplish?
Some people sign up for online learning to earn a score or grade while others only desire self-fulfillment. Both options are equally valid, but you should understand what matters to you before registering for the course. You should also consider whether you are looking to earn a certificate or other credential from learning online. Completing a course to acquire general knowledge is a good reason to become an online student as well.
Taking courses when you have the time and resources for them can help you land more gigs. A manager from a past gig may even call you back to a higher position once you have earned additional credentials.
